"Ooze 3" by Denise Stewart-Sanabria is part of Donuts Behaving Badly, a subseries within the artist's widely successful ongoing series Edible Dramas. This group of large-scale oil-on-canvas paintings features hyper-realist renderings of small-batch donuts from a local bakery in Chattanooga, TN. Sanabria creates a dramatic stage for the pastries posing them in intense, high-contrast lighting on a reflective tile surface against a deep black background.
"Ooze 3" features several pastries torn apart with jelly filling, icing, rainbow sprinkles, and candied toppings spilling onto the tiles. As with the rest of the Edible Dramas series, Sanabria anthropomorphizes the donuts as a light-hearted reflection of human indulgence. Initially inspired by William Hogarth's series, The Rake's Progress, Sanabria poses these decadent sweets as an amusing take on a debaucherous night on the town dramatized on several darkly-lit "stages."
